Dual Purpose Cattle Production Systems

Dual Purpose Cattle Production Systems produce both milk and beef, unlike specialized beef systems in the US, Australia etc with abundant rangeland. Compared to specialized dairy systems, it uses cattle with better beef production properties. In tropical America, it includes about 3/4 of the cattle, managed mostly by smallhold farmers, and contributes 40% of the milk production. Calves are on restricted suckling system, as part of the milk produced by the dam is consumed or sold. Similarly in Europe, beef and milk are produced from dairy-focused dual purpose systems.
Cattle used are mostly crossbreds of European breeds and locally adapted cows. Europe has developed many productive Dual Purpose Cattle Breeds that we can use here for crossbreeding through semen AI.
High levels of milk production from specialised dairy breeds are not practical in the humid tropics because the cows cannot get rid of the heat produced by the digestion and metabolism of the large amounts of feed required for high levels of milk production.
Recent research shows that this system have a good potential for the reduction of the environmental impacts of milk and beef production, specially with the use of  silvopastures with forage trees that sequester CO2.

Philippine Cattle Industry
As of 1 January 2019 the total cattle inventory is 2.54 million heads. Of this, 2.39 million heads are with backyard raisers, equivalent to 94%; and 1.10 million heads are females or cows. The top 5 cattle regions were Ilocos Region (Pangasinan), Central Visayas (Cebu), CALABARZON (Batangas), Western  Visayas (Iloilo), and Northern Mindanao (Bukidnon) with combined share of 52.27 percent of the cattle population.

In 2018, the gross value of cattle production was PhP 28.351 Billion, equivalent to 263,000 metric tons liveweight. The annual average farmgate price of cattle for slaughter was PhP 107.56 per kilogram liveweight. The average retail price of beef lean meat in the country was PhP 288.70 per kilogram.
In 2018, the importation of beef was 97,050 metric tons worth US$ 337.84 million  or $3.481 per kilo  or  about  P184 per kilo.

Philippine Dairy Industry
In 2018, local dairy production was 23.69 million kilograms worth P901.30 million, equivalent to 4.26% share of total dairy supply, that is 23% share of total liquid milk supply.

Total dairy animal herd inventory is 60,382 heads composed of 25,481 heads of dairy cattle, 18,291 heads of dairy carabaos, 16,610 heads of dairy goats.  62% of milk produced came from dairy cattle, 35% from carabao and 3% from goat.

Imports of milk and dairy products was 531.47 million kg. worth US$987.88 million or about P51 Billion. Imports were composed of Milk powder (52%), Skimmed milk powder (30%), whey powder (11%), whole milk powder (4%), and buttermilk powder (7%). Most Imports came from New Zealand (38%), (USA 21%), Malaysia (6%), Australia (6%).
